Born
"dahn safh" but raised "up noorth" Simon some
how managed to avoid picking up the local Yorkshire accent. But
with Welsh blood in his veins he was always destined to sing.
Singing roles in the school productions, and a keen membership
of both primary school and church choir, was followed by a stint
in the Huddersfield Choral society. During the three years in
the 120 strong youth choir Simon managed to fall through all sections
from the dizzying heights of male soprano, down through alto and
tenor, finally reaching the depths of second bass. Highlights
included an eventful exchange trip to Ochsenhausen in the Black
Forest, Germany with many a questionable sausage joke!
Popular
musical influences stemmed from the benefit of parents with good
taste and a love of Radio 1 (it was always on at breakfast and
weekends) with "Pick of the Pops" a Sunday lunchtime
favourite. Teenage spending money was often spent on new records
(cycling home with a Woolworths carrier bag flapping behind).
Simply Red, Queen, Phil Collins and George Michael became firm
favorites.
